WE DREAM / artist statement
We Dream is a black and white photographic series that aims to challenge a cliché in photography and play with the double meaning of the word "dream" when used in the context of homeless people. The series challenges the cliché of photographing homeless people because it does not portray the subjects as beggars or of a lower class than other people by eliminating the pedestrian human presence. Furthermore, the people depicted in We Dream are in the midst of being asleep, a daily action which is common amongst all people. It also creates an innocent, tranquil and peaceful mood within the photographs rather than feelings of pity and sorrow that are typically experienced. The word "dream" has a double meaning in this series because it not only describes the action of the people sleeping and literally dreaming but it also refers to the notion that homeless people "dream" of a better life. This parallel between the word "dream" was one that interested me and one i tried to convey through the photographs. All the photographs were photographed with a Zeiss Ikon rangefinder camera and developed & printed by hand in the dark room.
